Karibu Memorial Mural

Karibu has commissioned a memorial mural in tribute to three people connected to their community who died from Covid 19 during the pandemic. 

Ipswich arts organisation Art Eat Events invited Frederico Ramos to lead three workshops and co-create the mural design with the families of those who have passed. Community members came together to create ideas for this memorial mural, bringing in their own personal experiences and sharing stories about those who they lost. They will be painting the mural with volunteers and Frederico over this coming weekend 13-15th May on St Peters Dock. 

Karibu and Art Eat will be hosting an unveiling event on the 20th May at 11am, on St Peters Wharf, Ipswich Waterfront near Dance East. There will be a service and a period of reflection, afterwards they will host a reception at Burlington Baptist Church Hall on Burlington Road. This will offer people a chance to exchange stories and socialise with others who have had the same or similar experiences.

Frederico Ramos is a young artist in Ipswich. Specialising in portraiture, he has gained acclaim as a talented self-taught artist, and has exhibited artworks at Christchurch Mansion and The Hive on Norwich Road. This is his third mural project, he supported Lily Hammond paint her Art Eat mural - a homage to Maya Angelou, and he painted a mural for Volunteering Matters at The Old Court House. 

Karibu is a charity run by and for people of ethnic minority origin within the Ipswich and Suffolk areas, though many others also benefit from the services provided by Karibu. Karibu has been running for over 17 years with great success in holding a wide range of classes, events and celebrations.

Art Eat Events CIC is an Ipswich based arts organisation that commissions artists to work with communities and co-create large scale art works. Art Eat has created 13 community murals on Ipswich Waterfront since 2018.
