In today’s educational landscape, where children face increasing challenges, and academic targets are given ever greater focus, Delight‘s innovative arts-based learning programmes aim to bring magic back into children’s educational journeys. Our programmes offer spaces where creativity, self-expression, and joy are valued, demonstrating the powerful impact that arts-based learning can have on children’s creativity and wellbeing.
Creating Magic in Learning
Delight‘s vision is refreshingly simple: give every child an equal opportunity to thrive during their school years and beyond. By integrating art, dance, drama, and immersive storytelling into children’s learning, we create an environment where children are immersed in weekly creative workshops that allow them to express themselves, engage with the world around them, and let their imaginations flourish.
Our commitment to inclusivity ensures that the schools we work with in under-served communities can provide children with opportunities they might not otherwise have. In 2023-24, Delight‘s programmes reached 5,933 people, including 2,035 children, 80 teachers, and 3,818 community members.
Building Creative Confidence and Emotional Resilience

One of the most significant impacts of Delight programmes is the effect on children’s emotional wellbeing. Arts based learning helps children who struggle with ‘traditional’ teaching methods develop tools and coping mechanisms for anxiety and mental health challenges. The programmes create safe spaces where children can experiment with new ideas, make mistakes, build resilience, and develop a stronger sense of self-worth. These are invaluable skills that extend far beyond the arts themselves, influencing how children approach challenges in all areas of their lives.
Jenna, a refugee child with limited English, found her voice through Delight in Stories. Her teacher observed that “since taking part, Jenna is more excited and confident to voice her opinions in class.” The programme increased her writing stamina and creativity, with Jenna sharing, “I love stories. I like to write about things that happen in my mind and I like how I can write these ideas for people to enjoy.”
Enhancing Social and Emotional Development

The positive impact of arts-based learning on children’s social and emotional wellbeing is evident in our most recent impact report ‘The Power of Arts-Based Learning’, which revealed a statistically significant increase of 15.4 percentage points in social development scores for Pupil Premium children across all programmes.
In the Delight in Shakespeare, where children develop self-expression and confidence through drama and performance, one child stated, “I felt joyful taking part and having a role made me feel like I could express myself to higher levels of acting and felt I was part of a community.”
Empowering Teachers Through Professional Development
Delight programmes are developed in partnership with children, teachers, and arts professionals so that they evolve to meet the needs of children and teachers. By developing the skills, confidence and knowledge of teachers we can create sustainable change in schools. Our Continuing Professional Development ensures that the benefits of arts-based education extend beyond specific programme sessions and become integrated into everyday teaching practices.
87% of participating teachers in 2023-24 reported increased confidence in using arts-based learning techniques, and 86% committed to incorporating these approaches into their future teaching practice.
As one teacher shared, “It is one of the best projects I’ve been involved in – and I’ve been teaching for 30 years!”
The Case for Arts-Based Learning
Through arts-based learning children not only develop artistic skills, but their creative experiences also improve learning engagement, wellbeing, social skills and aspirations. The impact of our programmes is robustly evidenced, but the true value goes far beyond what we can measure. It’s about making a deep fundamental change to how a child values themself and how this in turn affects a desire to engage with others and with learning.
During Creativity and Wellbeing Week we want to urge all those working in education to reflect on the magic that happens when we place creativity at the heart of curriculum. The commitment and enthusiasm of teachers and senior leaders at our partner schools reveals how schools can nurture children’s wellbeing, rather than focusing narrowly on academic achievement. Their passion for delivering high-quality art-based learning helps prepare children not just for exams but for life—equipped with confidence, resilience, and a love of learning.
